Rochester's original Sons of Veterans Camp was Charles W. Canney Camp # 29, which was organized in 1887. The camp was named after a 19 year old Rochester resident who was a Sergeant in Co. D, 5th N.H.V. and was killed June 3,1864 during the battle of Cold Harbor. The camp disbanded around 1914.

The goal of Charles W. Canney Camp is to promote and preserve the memory of the Civil War Veteran and to remember all those who help keep this country free.

Charles W. Canney Camp is very active doing school and organizational talks and displays, memorials as well as researching Civil War Veterans.

On August 20, 1954, by an act of the US Congress, the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War was declared the legal heir to the GAR.

The goal of this camp is to preserve the memory of the Civil War Veteran and to pay honor to all those who fought to keep us free.
