Soldier’s Home

Park Cemetery

 Tilton, New Hampshire

Tilton is the home of the Soldiers' Home, which was established in 1890 for the Civil War Veterans. Not far from the Soldiers' Home is Park Cemetery where the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) had an area that was used to bury the Civil War Veterans from the Home. Also located in this area are a few Spanish-American and WWI Veterans. One wife of a Civil War Veteran was buried along side her husband in this area.

Above is a photo of where the Civil War Veterans are buried in Park Cemetery.

The following is part of an article that was in the Wiers Times of August 22, 2002.

"Tilton - Selectmen have not yet decided whether to support or oppose the relocation of the remains of 142 veterans buried in Park Cemetery to the N.H. Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen.

Ken Tarr, former commandant of the N.H. Veterans Home proposed the idea. He believes the soldiers who once lived at the home should be buried with their comrades in the state cemetery. The plan is supported by the Park Cemetery and the State American Legion and VFW. Tarr said he was interested in this project when the Cemetery Assoc., told him the cemetery was running out of room and at some point in the future would not have space for additional graves for residents of the Veterans Home.

Board of selectmen Chair Robert Brown said the cemetery is not owned by the town but state law makes it the governing body if no family members can be found to approve the removal of the remains.

Former selectman Jim Dodge expressed his opposition to the proposal, noting that most of the veterans (88) fought in the Civil War and maintaing their graves should not be disturbed, "Hallowed Ground."

There are two different sites in Park Cemetery where veterans are buried, the original site has 100 veterans graves (88 being Civil War). A newer plot has 42 Veterans. Residents of the home have been buried in this cemetery since 1896, and these veterans would have been buried in a veterans cemetery if we had one earlier Tarr stated. The remains will be placed into a vault for reburial in Boscawen under the original headstones."

On Sept. 11, 2002, Commander Meehan of Granite State Camp # 5 and Bonnie Tolman, President of the N.H. Aux. visited the Park Cemetery and gathered the names and regiments of the veterans. On Sept. 19, Commander Meehan, N.H. Aux.  President Tolman, N.H. Department Commander Murray and Cliff Newton of Rochester Metrocast Cable did an interview about the plans to move these veterans to Boscawen and to show their opposition about removing these veterans from their burial place. Also learned that day was that the woman buried with her husband would be left behind and her husband would be moved to Boscowen.

On October 3, 2002 a group consisting of Granite State Camp 5 Commander Meehan, N.H. Dept. Commander Murray, and N.H. Dept. President Bonnie along with non-members Bonnie and Thomas Knott (a descendant of a Civil War vet buried in Park Cemetery) and Peter Chapman, a re-enactor with the N.H. Sharpshooters attended the Tilton Selectmen's meeting.

After about a twenty minute discussion and further comment period, the Selectmen UNANIMOUSLY VOTED DOWN support of Mr. Tarr's proposal!!!!!  There will be NO REMOVAL OF BODIES from the Park Cemetery.
